What to Expect

A crowded city of Naples is a fascinating city and it’s a place full of art and history.

Naples has been dominated by different rulers such as Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians and Spanish bourbons, bringing to the city an extremely rich mixture of tradition.

Walking down the streets people can admire the beauty and magnificence of its buildings and old churches in different architectural styles, aligned along picturesque streets. In typical shops it’s possible to taste local food, hand-made delicacies and sweets. The quality and uniqueness of this flavors constitute the world-famous culinary tradition of the city.

Why choose this tour? Because Naples is a mixture of colors and perfumes. Here the visitors are enchanted by the warmth of its people and the sounds of daily life; Naples’ life unfolds slowly and simply but in a charming way.

“Piazza del Gesù” is one of the most important and famous squares of the city, it’s a few steps away from main attractions in the historical center: Toledo street (the main shopping street), Piazza Dante, Piazza Monteoliveto and Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. In “Piazza del Gesù” there’s a plaque put up by the Unesco to mark the fact that the historical center of Naples is included in the World Heritage sites list and is considered as one of the most ancient and richest historical centers in Europe.

In the center of the city there is a famous old street called “Spaccanapoli”, a long and narrow street that divides the old Naples in two perfect halfs. It consists of many shops, restaurants and typical alleys. In this street there is monastery of Saint Chiara dating back the 14th century. It was made in Gothic style but during the 18th century decorated in a Baroque style that gives the church its look of opulence and splendor.

During the tour customers will be impressed by the absolute pearl of Naples, famous Chapel San Severo featuring the statue “Cristo Velato” by Giuseppe Sanmartino.  This marble statue is a masterpiece of the 18th century representing dead Christ covered by a veil. Legend has it that an alchemist taught the sculptor how to convert real veil into a marble veil.

Piazza St. Gennaro is the oldest square of the city. “Agorà” was situated here in Greek times. In Roman times this place was taken by a forum. Around it are located two magnificent monumental churches of Naples: San Lorenzo and San Paolo Maggiore.

San Lorenzo church was the most elegant church of the city in the past. It was rebuilt by King Charles D’Angiò and was visited by the King’s family and the aristocracy. San Paolo Maggiore is famous for the cemetery that was discovered during the post-war period.

Further down the Spaccanapoli street we will see San Domenico Maggiore Church, where a perfect overlapping of different architectural styles will certainly amaze you. Splendid frescoes, colonnade and high altar all are truly grand and beautiful.

The little side street called “San Gregorio Armeno” is today one of the most famous streets of the city, visited by people from every part of the world for its unique nativity scene workshops.

The tour guide will show the tourists a painting by Caravaggio in the Pio Monte di Misericordia chapel – an elegant piece titled “The seven works of mercy”.

The baroque cathedral of Saint Gennaro dating back to the 13th century is at the heart of the Neapolitan faith. Here the blood of the saint patron St. Gennaro is preserved. It becomes liquid during the so-called “Miracle of St. Gennaro”. This explains why all citizens show deep devotion towards this church.

No one arriving to Naples can’t miss the pizzaexperience. Pizza is the true symbol of Naples and pride of its inhabitants. It’s part of the local tradition and local life. Only by eating a pizza can tourists fully understand the genuine and sunny personality of a Neapolitan because a piece of pizza is simple, good and warm.

There is so much to say but only by visiting Naples will it be possible to fall in love with the city and its countless treasures.
